Empty spool weights
Prusament empty spool weight, measured instead of guessed
Prusament spools land right around 200 g empty. Community measurements cluster between 192 and 207 g, with humidity accounting for a few grams of that spread because the core is cardboard.
Prusa is also the one brand that actually helps you here: every Prusament spool has per-spool manufacturing data behind the QR code on the side, and Prusa runs a separate web tool that turns your measured spool-plus-filament weight into remaining length. For a quick answer while standing at the printer, weigh the spool and let the calculator below do the subtraction.
Prusament spool weights at a glance
| Spool | Empty weight (g) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Prusament 1 kg spool | 192-207 | Cardboard-core spool; ~200 g is the safe working number. Humidity moves it a few grams either way. |
Spools vary a few grams batch to batch, so treat these as good starting points. The exact answer takes one minute: weigh an empty spool of the type you use, write the number on it with a Sharpie, and pick Custom in the calculator from then on.
How to weigh it right
- Take the spool off the printer or out of the AMS. Anything supporting the spool skews the reading.
- Use a kitchen scale on a flat surface. Gram resolution is plenty; you do not need a lab scale.
- Enter the total weight above, pick the matching spool type, and read off grams remaining. The result updates as you type.
Frequently asked
- Why does my Prusament spool read 194 g when the preset says 200 g?
- Both are right. The cardboard core gains and loses a few grams with ambient humidity, and manufacturing tolerance adds a little spread on top. A dry-stored spool often reads in the low 190s. If you want tighter numbers, weigh yours and use Custom.
- Doesn't Prusa publish the exact data for my spool?
- Close. Scan the QR code on the spool sticker and you get that spool's manufacturing record, and Prusament runs a separate web tool that converts your measured spool-plus-filament weight into remaining length. This page is for the fast version: scale, subtract, done.
- Does the 200 g figure work for all Prusament materials?
- For the standard 1 kg spools, yes, the spool is the same regardless of whether PLA, PETG or ASA is wound on it. The 2 kg and refill formats are different animals; weigh those once before trusting any preset.
